RDW measures the variation in size (anisocytosis) of red blood cells (RBCs). It is part of the Complete Blood Count (CBC) and helps classify and diagnose different types of anemia. This test is ordered to evaluate anemia, workup of microcytosis / macrocytosis, nutritional deficiency screening, monitoring response to therapy (iron, B12, folate).
